Dr. Ruth M. Bell, CM, LL.D., 39th CFUW-Ottawa President, 1968-70, 19th CFUW President, 1973-76

Dr. Ruth Bell, who died on Dec. 16, 2015, will be missed by her many friends in CFUW-Ottawa. She was a life member of the Club, a generous supporter of our Scholarship Trust Fund, and active in many capacities over the years.


Her obituary was published in the Ottawa Citizen from Dec. 19 to 21, 2015 and in The Globe and Mail on Dec. 19 and is found online at http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/ottawacitizen/obituary.aspx?pid=176956406 . A tribute to Ruth also appears in the February 2016 issue of the Carillon.

"It is with great sadness that we note the death of Ruth Bell who died on December 16, 2015.

Dr. Bell was CFUW National President from 1973 to 1976. She was made Member of the Order of Canada in 1981 and received an honorary degree from Carleton University in 1984. She also received two Canada 125 medals.

Ruth was instrumental in setting up the CFUW Charitable Trust and held the title of CFUW Archivist Emeritas. She was involved in a number of IFUW conferences and served on IFUW committees.

Ruth was very active in volunteer work and was a board member of many groups such as UNESCO, the Canadian Association for Adult Education, YWCA, International Year of the Child Committee, Canadian Committee for Learning Opportunities for Women, Forum for Young Canadians, Royal Ottawa Hospital, Nepean Public Library, and the Ontario Educational Communications Authority."
